The chapter aims to utilise the translocational positionality framework to suggest ways that care professionals in dementia care settings can reflect and support their organisations to be more inclusive. It explores key notions of identity, gender, power dynamics and micro-aggressions within care settings. The chapter adopts Foucault’s concepts of power and knowledge to enable professionals to reflect on the role they play in ensuring settings are inclusive for gender non-conforming individuals with dementia. Intersections between gender non-conformity and dementia will be explored by considering common micro-aggressions, subtle forms of discrimination that occur through language and actions (Pierce et al, 1977), and how they occur against gender diverse and transgender individuals in dementia care settings. Recommendations for practice are also included to support the development and delivery of inclusive care for gender non-conforming individuals with dementia, such as adopting gender-inclusive imagery, literature, recognising power dynamics and the need for advocacy in care planning and delivery.
