9: Opening oneself up and staying open to the other or others

This chapter elucidates the politico-moral conviction of the book, that the other must be recognised and acknowledged as a member of the one human family and therefore deserves to be included both relationally and socially. Abandoning and leaving the other, literally or metaphorically, especially those in need of care, prolongs suffering and adds harm. But, as another human being, the other will always to some degree escape my understanding. Therefore, good care requires professionals to open themselves up and stay open to the other by perceiving as unbiasedly, as openly and as carefully as possible, by faithfully staying with them, by regardful attentiveness to them and by permanent inquiry. An attitude of not knowing in advance is quintessential. As is the willingness to faithfully accompany the other.
