This chapter traces the history of Moomin from Tove Jansson’s creations to a global art-based brand and growing business ecosystem. It is based on three key themes. The first relates to ways of working, the second to products and audiences, and the third to branding, marketing, and sales. We call these the ebb and flow of inspiration, characters and stories that stand the test of time, and balancing between art and business. These help in making sense of the underpinnings of the success of Moomin and offer a grounding for everything that we cover in subsequent chapters. They form a story about the birth (and life) of ideas.

This chapter focuses on the Moomin brand as an interface with consumers as clients. The Moomin ecosystem is characterized by managing a universally local art-based brand, while staying true to its roots. Branding Moomin is about being larger than life in the hearts and minds of people. Branding generously is about openness, curiosity, and sharing, but it is also about staying true to the origins of the brand and actively managing its boundaries. Sometimes protecting the brand feels like an uphill struggle when disputes and conflicts escalating in the media and social media are managed.

This chapter ends the book with a party. Partying together is an essential part of the Moomin way and managing with generosity. In all their incarnations, parties are a good way to share emotions, celebrate together, and spread joy. Parties are about storytelling, and they are significant for creating shared experiences and memories – and adding nuances to the shared Moomin story. In a great party, we can forget our worries for a little while. Then the quest continues to make the world a better place for all – the Moomin way.

This chapter zooms in on how people are managed in the Moomin ecosystem. It looks at Moomin as a social community that lives the brand real. Generosity is based on showing people how and why they matter and taking their needs and feelings seriously. It helps to appreciate and manage differences and to develop a resilient organization where people can find meaning. Managing people at Moomin is peppered by prickly humour that is a useful vehicle of generosity but needs to be used with care. Aspiring to do good things and learning together is what matters most. Strategy stirs emotions and it is heatedly debated at times. Strategizing generously means involving more people and extending the pool of strategists. Moomin strategy work is seemingly without design, but it is guided by a sense of purpose and driven by the values of love, equality, and courage that serve as bridges from the past to the future. This enables exploring new opportunities and making quick decisions. Different viewpoints and disputes add spice to the boldness of strategy work at Moomin.

This chapter recounts what it means to recreate a two-dimensional world as three-dimensional. It highlights how Moomins are taken to the virtual sphere and how generosity is extended to new environments. New technologies offer opportunities for values-based business and management in the Moomin ecosystem. They also provide acute challenges for retaining Tove Jansson’s spirit and values when scaling the digital footprint and engaging in new collaborations with big global players. Digitalizing generously is a trial-and-error process where the coherence of the Moomin story is tested. Generosity works through people, and creating great content remains at the heart of the Moomin business in the virtual sphere.
