In this chapter, the author outlines her journey through academia as a Black scientist and the power of taking matters into her own hands to drive change. She explains how she was already very proactive with outreach, creating opportunities for underrepresented minorities, but escalated her efforts to establish a global network, that has blossomed into a non-profit organisation that supports, develops and uplifts Black immunologists. This chapter outlines her own PhD journey, the obstacles she overcame, and how she used her spare time to empower and strengthen others.
The final chapter in this part, ‘The missing ones’, is a space to recognise missing contributions. The reader is invited to reflect on the many Black scholars who, for whatever reason associated with the machinations of doctoral study, have been airbrushed from the pages of academia. This chapter puts into context that, beyond the many stories in the book, there are still many voices of Black scholars in the UK that have yet to be meaningfully recognised.
