One of the signature horrors of our generation was the murders in Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown. Lee Keylock was a high-school teacher in Sandy Hook and discusses how we must be more intentional about using narrative as the vehicle to support, care for and heal our fellow humans, arguing that a fuller, more nuanced, awareness about an individual can only increase the quality of care that we can give. He argues that if we collapse the distance between people and see our own self in another’s story (a radical act), then we are more apt to treat them compassionately.
